Introduction to Salah

The second pillar of Islam — a direct connection between the servant and Allah

What is Salah?

Salah (prayer) is the act of worship that establishes a direct connection between the believer and Allah. It is performed five times daily and is the second pillar of Islam, after the declaration of faith (Shahada).

Significance of Salah

Prayer is the first act of worship that will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. It purifies the soul, prevents sin, and brings tranquility to the heart.

Five Daily Prayers

The five obligatory prayers are Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). Each prayer has a specific time window.

Congregation (Jama'ah)

Offering prayer in congregation is highly rewarded. The Prophet ﷺ said that praying in congregation is 27 times more rewarding than praying alone.

How to Perform Salah

A step-by-step guide to performing the five daily prayers

1
Intention (Niyyah)

Make the intention in your heart for the specific prayer you are about to perform. The intention is made silently.

2
Takbir al-Tahrimah

Raise your hands to your ears and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest). This marks the beginning of the prayer.

3
Qiyam (Standing)

Place your right hand over your left on your chest. Recite the opening supplication, then Surah Al-Fatiha, followed by another Surah or verses.

4
Ruku' (Bowing)

Bow down, placing your hands on your knees, with a straight back. Say "Subhana Rabbiyal Azim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty) three times.

5
Rise from Ruku'

Rise to a standing position and say "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him), then "Rabbana lakal hamd".

6
Sajdah (Prostration)

Prostrate with your forehead, nose, hands, knees, and toes touching the ground. Say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times.

7
Rise from Sajdah

Rise to a sitting position, then perform a second Sajdah. This completes one rak'ah. Repeat for the required number of rak'ahs.

8
Tashahhud (Sitting)

In the final sitting, recite the Tashahhud, then send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and conclude with the Salam (turning the head to the right and left).

History of Salah

The journey of prayer from the time of the prophets to today

Isra and Mi'raj (Night Journey)
~ 621 CE

The five daily prayers were made obligatory during the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ miraculous Night Journey and Ascension. Initially 50 prayers were commanded, but the number was reduced to 5.

Prayer in the Early Makkan Period
610-622 CE

Prayer was commanded from the very beginning of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions would pray in secret and then openly in Makkah. Early prayers consisted of 2 rak'ahs.

Qibla Change to Makkah
624 CE

The Qibla (direction of prayer) was changed from Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Makkah. This was a significant moment in Islamic history, establishing the unity of Muslims worldwide.

Prayer in the Medinan Period
622-632 CE

Prayer was perfected in Madinah. The congregational prayers were established in the mosque, and the Jumu'ah (Friday) prayer was introduced.

Preservation of Prayer
632 CE - Present

Prayer has been preserved through the generations by meticulous transmission of the Prophet's ﷺ teachings. Scholars and Imams have maintained the proper method of prayer.

Today
Present

Prayer continues to be the central act of worship for over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. Technology has made prayer times accessible globally, and mosques continue to be centers of community life.
