What is Hajj?

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that every physically and financially capable Muslim is required to perform at least once in their lifetime. It is the fifth pillar of Islam and one of the most profound acts of worship.

The Quran says: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find thereto a way." — Surah Al-Imran (3:97)

Step 1

Ihram

Entering the state of Ihram, wearing simple white garments, and making the intention for Hajj or Umrah.

Step 2

Tawaf

Circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone.

Step 3

Sa'i

Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hagar's search for water.

Step 4

Wuquf at Arafat

Standing at the Plain of Arafat from noon to sunset — the most essential part of Hajj.

Step 5

Muzdalifah

Spending the night at Muzdalifah, collecting pebbles for the stoning ritual.

Step 6

Stoning the Jamarat

Throwing pebbles at the three pillars representing Satan, symbolizing the rejection of evil.

Step 7

Halq or Taqsir

Shaving the head (Halq) or trimming the hair (Taqsir), symbolizing spiritual rebirth.

Step 8

Farewell Tawaf

Performing a final Tawaf around the Kaaba before leaving Makkah.

What is Umrah?

Umrah is a lesser pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year. While Hajj is obligatory, Umrah is highly recommended and holds immense spiritual rewards. It is a shorter pilgrimage consisting of Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah).

Prophetic Tradition: The Prophet ﷺ said, "An Umrah to another Umrah is an expiation for whatever sins occur between them." (Bukhari & Muslim)
